The first history book to nurture your child's wisdom, character, and well-being! This is 'Sul Min-seok's Great Adventure in Korean History,' the trusted guide to Korean history for children across the country! To fulfill Grandmother Hwang Geum-sun's wish, Teacher Sul, Ondal, and Pyeonggang embark on a sad yet beautiful journey through history! From the Christmas Miracle to the wartime capital of Busan and the young student soldiers, this volume looks back on the deep sorrow caused by the Korean War, the greatest tragedy in modern Korean history. June 25, 2021 marked 71 years since the outbreak of the Korean War. Enough time has passed that those born around that time have now grown into kind grandmothers and grandfathers. Yet the Korean Peninsula remains divided, countless families remain separated, and many still wait anxiously for news of loved ones who fought in the war—hoping that if they did not survive, their remains might one day be returned. 'Sul Min-seok's Great Adventure in Korean History 17' tells the story of the Korean War, the greatest tragedy of our modern history. Rather than focusing on political, military, or international issues, this book shares the story of the grandmothers and grandfathers who bore the full weight of the war's suffering. Grandmother Hwang Geum-sun, who is like a real grandmother to Ondal, is always bright and cheerful. But every June 25th, she brings sweet potatoes to the National Cemetery. She goes there to see her older brother, who joined the war as a student soldier and whose fate remains unknown. She often says her only wish is to see her brother's face just once more before she dies—something Ondal believes is impossible. But when he sees how deeply she longs for her brother and how much pain she carries, Ondal decides to help make her wish come true, and sets off on a journey through history with Teacher Sul and Pyeonggang. Arriving in the midst of the Korean War, the group witnesses the 'Christmas Miracle'—the Hungnam Evacuation, an extraordinary act of humanity amid extreme cold and fear—and meets Grandmother Geum-sun's family as they flee as refugees, traveling together all the way to Busan. Despite the hardships, the family tries to keep living—studying at school, working at the Gukje Market—but the war shows no sign of ending, and the future remains uncertain, with no clear path back home. Determined to help end the war sooner, Geum-sun's older brother, Geum-san, makes a difficult decision: he volunteers as a student soldier. Leaving behind only a single photograph taken with his sister, he heads off to the battlefield, and Geum-sun spends the rest of her life missing him. Will Grandmother Geum-sun's wish finally come true? 'Sul Min-seok's Great Adventure in Korean History 17' takes a close look at how the Korean War unfolded, and explores the city of Busan, which served as the temporary capital for nearly a thousand days. It also sheds light on the young student soldiers who fought to protect their country, as well as the painful and unresolved issue of separated families—a lasting wound in Korean history. As you read this volume, take a moment to reflect once more on the Korean War, a national tragedy that must never be repeated.
