Description

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Professor John Hopfield of Princeton University and Professor Geoffrey Hinton of the University of Toronto for pioneering machine learning with artificial neural networks. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Professor David Baker of the University of Washington and Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, along with Director John Jumper, for developing the deep learning model AlphaFold, which unraveled the secrets of protein structures. Their achievements were recognized for significantly contributing to solving long-standing challenges faced by humanity through AI. Indeed, it was a year when AI swept the Nobel Prizes. The world is now captivated by AI, and everyone is diving into its limitless possibilities. However, the fierce competition to dominate this market has begun to create side effects alongside its potential. The "World Future Report 2025-2035" examines how generative AI has performed across various industries globally since its debut in late 2022 and predicts how it will change the future of these industries. It also explores the visible side effects over the past two years, such as AI washing, intelligent crime, and the decline in content quality of generative AI. Among these, an unexpected serious issue is carbon emissions. ▶ Moments of warming that record 'the first time in a century', 'since observations began', and 'in history' The carbon emissions that have increased since industrialization have caused global warming, leading to severe distress for the Earth. In response to various natural disasters and the extreme heat recorded every summer, world governments have come together to agree to limit warming to below 1.5℃ compared to pre-industrial levels. Many companies that joined this effort have also declared a net-zero carbon emission by 2030. However, in 2023, Google and Microsoft increased their carbon emissions, becoming climate villains. The reason for this is none other than the AI development competition. When asked the same question, AI like ChatGPT uses ten times more energy than a Google search. Considering the widespread search functionality of Google, the energy consumption that would occur if it were replaced by generative AI is unimaginable. The electricity used by Google and Microsoft in 2023 was more than the energy consumption of an entire country, with 100 countries like Iceland and Croatia using less energy than these two companies. While the potential energy shortage is a concern, if usage continues to increase without transitioning to eco-friendly renewable energy, humanity could face extinction due to warming caused by carbon emissions. The "World Future Report 2025-2035" centers on the seriousness of climate change alongside AI. The reason is that, as explained earlier, the development of AI and climate change are not unrelated. Until now, climate change was seen as a distant issue or one that affected other countries, but it has become increasingly serious and is no longer someone else's problem. Adil Najam, chairman of the World Wildlife Fund, stated, "There is no longer a need to explain climate change," emphasizing that it can be witnessed directly by opening a window. The British daily newspaper, The Guardian, reported in 2014 that climate experts warned that we had already passed the 'point of no return' regarding climate change. As expressed by The Guardian, warming has led to a 'climate emergency' rather than just climate change. Notably, July 2024 was recorded as being 1.48°C higher than pre-industrial levels, bringing us perilously close to the survival threshold of 1.5℃. This book examines the overall situation of the climate emergency, explores the maximum temperature at which humanity can survive, and discusses what will happen globally if we exceed 1.5℃, featuring insights from experts worldwide. It also reviews the current status of renewable energy transitions, carbon capture technology development, and efforts by various industries, governments, and academia to address climate issues using AI. ▶ The flow of major technologies from smartphones → ChatGPT (generative AI) → robots The "World Future Report 2025-2035" also examines next-generation technologies that will become key industries in the future, including innovations in medical technology and the realization of new modes of transportation, which we have always been interested in. Among these, the development of robotics technology is particularly noteworthy. Until now, robots were merely machines that operated according to inputted programs, but with the advancement of AI, robot development is accelerating. Experts in the field of robotics predict that by 2050, the number of android robots will surpass that of humans. Android robots are being recognized as a technology that will bring about innovations that change existing ways of life, similar to the advent of smartphones. From tiny robots like nanobots that heal the body from within to massive robots that will serve as human habitats and workplaces in the sea or space, we can explore the expanded future of robotics. The "World Future Report" has already introduced readers to the achievements in machine learning and deep learning that have won Nobel Prizes in the past few years. The various technologies and trends introduced this time will also become central technologies and noteworthy trends in the coming years. Through this book, we hope readers will gain an opportunity to look into the future ahead of time.
