With its many mountainous regions and complex coastline, Greece was difficult to unite into a single nation, so the Greeks instead built small city-states throughout the mainland and around the Mediterranean. These city-states, which arose across Greece from around the 8th century BCE, were called poleis. Each polis developed its own political, economic, and social systems, sometimes competing and sometimes forming alliances with one another. Athens, one of Greece's leading city-states, left behind many magnificent structures, including the Parthenon. Sparta, well known as a powerful military state, trained all its citizens to be warriors. Spartan citizens began rigorous physical and military training at age seven at an institution called the Agoge, and upon reaching adulthood, they served in the military from ages 20 to 60. As a result, Sparta maintained a formidable military reputation throughout the Greek world. Meanwhile, around the 3rd century BCE, Alexander the Great rose from the Kingdom of Macedonia in northern Greece, unifying Greece and going on to conquer parts of Asia and Africa, building a vast empire. By spreading Greek culture throughout the lands he conquered, he ushered in the Hellenistic Age, a period in which Greek culture blended with the native cultures of each region. He founded as many as 70 cities named Alexandria after himself throughout his conquered territories, relocating Greeks there to govern them — and in this process, Greek culture met and merged with Eastern cultures to create a unique new culture. This era is known as the Hellenistic period. While Hellenistic culture was rooted in Greek culture, it differed somewhat in character from traditional Greek culture.
