Ancient China's Yellow River Civilization, born from the river of yellow earth! Meet the beginnings of the Chinese dynasties that flourished across 5,000 years of history!
From the four great ancient civilizations to the key events and figures of world history found in textbooks, learn through adventure with Isseum's new educational comic series, World History Treasure Hunt!
The hero of World History Treasure Hunt is none other than Bongpal, the lovable villain from the Treasure Hunt series. But this isn't the artifact agent Bongpal who once tormented Pangi and Tori — this is Paris, an eleven-year-old boy with a deep knowledge of history. Like a movie prequel that traces a character's past, World History Treasure Hunt goes back to Bongpal's childhood to explore world history.
Following Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, and the Indus Valley Civilization, China's Yellow River Civilization — one of the four great ancient civilizations — is the fourth era in Bongpal's adventures.
The Yellow River, the heart of China, carries about 1.6 billion tons of yellow silt from the Loess Plateau each year, giving it its yellowish color and its name, the "River of Yellow Earth." The fertile soil deposited by the river made the land ideal for growing crops, drawing people to settle there from early times.
From the Neolithic Yangshao and Longshan cultures, through the mythical Xia Dynasty and the first recorded dynasty, the Shang, to the rise and fall of states during the Zhou Dynasty and the Spring and Autumn/Warring States period, and finally to the founding of the Qin Dynasty — China's first unified empire — countless dynasties rose and fell along the Yellow River. The Yellow River Civilization truly marks the beginning of Chinese culture and history.
Join Bongpal, the Treasure Prince, and Gongdal, a descendant of Confucius, as they search for treasures across China's Yellow River Civilization! Set off on a brand-new adventure across the vast landscape of ancient China!
The Yellow River: Origin of Chinese Civilization That Shaped All of Asia!
The History and Culture of Ancient China, Flourishing Across 5,000 Years
The Yellow River flows 5,464 km across China from west to east. Thanks to the yellow silt it carries, the land along its banks was excellent for farming, drawing large populations from early times. Beginning around 2200 BCE, these communities began using bronze tools and writing, forming numerous large and small states — together known as the Yellow River Civilization.
Among the many states of this civilization, the first was the Shang Dynasty, founded around 1600 BCE. Long considered legendary, the Shang Dynasty became widely recognized after the discovery of the ruins of Yin in the early 20th century. Many artifacts were unearthed at Yin, the last capital of the Shang, the most famous being oracle bone fragments — turtle shells inscribed with pictographic characters. These inscriptions, known as oracle bone script, are considered the origin of Chinese characters. The massive bronze cauldron known as the Simuwu Ding, along with various other bronze artifacts found at Yin, showcase the advanced bronze craftsmanship of the Shang Dynasty.
The Yellow River Civilization, which forms the foundation of ancient Chinese history, continued to develop through the rise of successive states after the Shang. In 1066 BCE, the Zhou Dynasty rose to power after the Shang, followed by a chaotic era of regional power struggles known as the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. Finally, in 221 BCE, Qin Shi Huang unified China for the first time among the rival states, laying the foundation for future Chinese dynasties.
Beginning along the river of yellow earth, China's Yellow River Civilization gave rise to diverse dynasties and schools of thought! The history, institutions, philosophy, and culture of the Yellow River Civilization spread throughout Asia, becoming the prototype for Asian culture as a whole.
Through the information pages of World History Treasure Hunt, discover ancient Chinese history and culture, the artifacts and ruins left behind by each dynasty, and a wide range of ideas — all explained in an easy and engaging way!
