Description
A picture book that helps toddlers who are still learning to express themselves develop better communication skills. "Don't Just Say 'No' or 'I Don't Know,' Tell Me Why!" is a picture book that raises children to think before they speak.
Infants and toddlers often don't know how to communicate appropriately, so they start out simply crying, and then as their sense of self develops, they begin expressing their thoughts with words like "No" and "I don't know." The main character, a baby monkey, always responds to Mom and Dad's questions with "No" and "I don't know." But when he falls under the spell of the "No Witch," and his parents work hard to break the spell, he comes to realize just how frustrating and upsetting his way of speaking is to others—and learns to change it.
This picture book is designed for children who are just beginning to talk and express their own thoughts. As kids read along, it will naturally help them recognize unhelpful speech habits and learn better ways to express themselves.
About the Author
Author: Lee Chan-gyu is a professor in the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Chung-Ang University and a language communication specialist. His research has focused on the meaning of language, language communication, and language communication education. In particular, he believes strongly in the importance of nurturing children's ability to communicate smoothly with others from an early age, and with that in mind, he planned the "Baby Communication" series of language communication education books for young children.
The first book in the "Baby Communication" series, "Don't Cry, Just Tell Me," points out common issues in children's language expression and teaches them how to respond in different situations. Featuring a baby bear who cries at the drop of a hat, the book teaches children who whine or throw tantrums to get what they want how to properly put their thoughts into words instead.
The second book in the series, "Tell Me Why," shows how frustrating the words "No" and "I don't know"—the phrases young children use most often—can be for others, and emphasizes the importance of learning to express one's thoughts clearly. Rather than asserting themselves through instinctive, simple emotional expressions, children are encouraged to think about "why" before speaking, which helps develop their thinking skills and build healthy relationships with others.
Illustrator: Lee Hyung-jin was born in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do, and has loved drawing since childhood. She graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University and has worked as a freelance illustrator since 1990. Alongside illustrating, she also has a strong interest in writing. Her illustrated books include "Why Was Gapsu the Cat Embarrassed?", "What Does Baduk Do at Night?", "Hello, Sponge Tree", "Gooman Knows", and "I'm a Stray Dog". She has also planned and illustrated the "Science Up Close" series, the "Hello" series, the "Honey Peanut" series, and "Same or Different?". Additionally, she has written and illustrated books such as "Kkeutji", "Myeong-ae and Darae", "Silk Skirt", "Hana Got Lost", "Heungbu's Mongrel Dog", and "The Goblin Who Catches Tigers".
