Description A New York Times Best Illustrated Book, winner of a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor, and a work by author Suzy Lee, nominated as Korea's candidate for the 2016 Hans Christian Andersen Award — a perfect pairing with beloved American children's author Bernard Waber! "Daddy, Ask Me," a book that beautifully unites the text of celebrated American children's author Bernard Waber with the illustrations of world-renowned Korean picture book artist Suzy Lee, has been published by Bir Bit Books. Suzy Lee has published picture books in Switzerland, Italy, Brazil, the United States, and many other countries, and every work she releases draws international attention. In this particular book, Suzy Lee's signature spatial storytelling is enriched with the beauty of the seasons. An artist who deeply understands and expresses the physical quality of the picture book medium, Suzy Lee captured the most vivid season — autumn — on paper. To richly express the colors and vitality of nature that appear only in autumn, she colored the entire book using only colored pencils. This is also the first book that Suzy Lee, who is raising a daughter around the same age as the child in the story, has translated herself. She carefully rendered Bernard Waber's characteristically simple and clean original text into Korean. We present "Daddy, Ask Me," a book that fully captures Suzy Lee's spatial artistry, vibrant color sense, and writing skill. Bernard Waber was a beloved American author who published more than 30 works filled with a childlike spirit reflecting his own childhood, all written in his signature spare and simple style. "Daddy, Ask Me" was written based on time Bernard Waber spent with his own daughter, and he was said to be very excited about what illustrations might accompany it. Sadly, however, Bernard Waber passed away in 2013 without ever seeing the finished artwork by Suzy Lee. After the book was published, Bernard Waber's daughter personally wrote a letter to Suzy Lee to express her gratitude: "My father was a funny, warm, and lovable man. As I read this book, I felt as though I could hear the conversations I had with him as a child. If he had seen the finished book with your illustrations, he would have been overjoyed. Thank you, Suzy Lee." [Publisher's Review] ■ A Conversation for Daddy and Child to Enjoy Together A father and daughter put on comfortable clothes and shoes and head out together. They arrive at a park where the maple trees have turned beautiful shades of red and gold. People have gathered here and there, eager to enjoy the crisp autumn air. Skipping ahead excitedly, the daughter turns back and asks her father, "Daddy, ask me what I like." Understanding her heart, the father asks, "What do you like?" As if she'd been waiting for the question, the daughter answers right away. "I like dogs. I like cats too, and turtles." "I like geese." Listening closely to what she says, the father continues the conversation with another question. "Geese flying in the sky? Or geese floating on the water?" Having a comfortable conversation like this with your child isn't difficult at all. All it takes is one simple, easy question. Just listen closely to how your child answers, and another question will naturally come to mind. That's all it takes — asking, listening, and asking again — to keep the conversation going. Bernard Waber wrote the story in dialogue form to directly show an easy way for parents and children to connect. The father's lines are printed in purple and the child's in black, so any reader can easily tell who is speaking. Reading "Daddy, Ask Me" naturally teaches this playful way of talking with your child. Even a quiet, reserved father has nothing to worry about — the back-and-forth dialogue is so simple and sweet that even a parent who isn't great with words will find it perfect for reading aloud at bedtime. Simply having relaxed conversations with parents is said to give children a sense of security and help build their vocabulary. There is remarkable power hidden in ordinary, everyday conversation. This picture book also gives children the reassurance that it's okay to ask questions freely of a trusted adult or parent. For children who feel shy or hesitant about asking questions, this book can serve as a gentle guide to help them express themselves. ■ A Happy Walk to Enjoy with All Five Senses Just as memorable as the conversation between father and daughter is what else this book has to offer...
