He earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Genoa in Italy. He then devoted himself to graphic art, gaining international acclaim as a designer, sculptor, and picture book author. His works include An Extraordinary Egg, It's Mine!, The Biggest House in the World, Swimmy, Six Crows, and Tico and the Golden Wings. He won the Caldecott Honor four times, including for Inch by Inch. He passed away in 1999 at the age of 89.
