Description: A beautiful and powerful story capturing the full range of human emotion—joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness! From An Nyeong-dal, the beloved author of Watermelon Pool and Grandma's Summer Vacation, comes Annyeong, a touching tale of Grandpa Sausage and his dog, who live together on a distant star in the vast universe.
This work, filled with the author's passion for exploring new possibilities in picture book storytelling, spans 264 pages and features 662 individual illustrated panels. Told in four parts, the story follows Grandpa Sausage's birth, his meeting with the dog, their eventual parting, and Grandpa Sausage's life afterward on a star in the afterlife.
On a distant star in the vast universe, where old and discarded objects come to live, Grandpa Sausage rides his electric scooter one day and comes across an abandoned dog outside a pet shop. He brings the dog home, and the two begin a life together. Their time together is portrayed slowly and gently, as if honoring the precious, unhurried moments of life.
As time passes, Grandpa Sausage passes away, leaving the dog alone at home. The dog ventures outside and meets Bomb Child and Fire—two unusual characters who hint at those who are different or physically challenged. Bomb Child has only a single strand of hair, unlike other children, while Fire's flame-like hair flickers according to its anxious feelings.
Just as Grandpa Sausage once welcomed the abandoned dog into his home in the darkness, Bomb Child reaches out to the dog, and together, the dog and Bomb Child reach out to Fire, who has been hiding in the woods, inviting it to join them on their journey.
This work reveals an even deeper and richer picture book world from the author. Grandpa Sausage, the dog, Bomb Child, Fire, and even a teddy bear—every character in this story is someone who is alone. Though they may not all find comfort and happiness together within the story, across the distances between stars, and across the boundary between life and death, they think of one another, miss each other, and quietly check in—saying "annyeong."
Inspired by the word 'annyeong,' a greeting used for both meeting and parting, this story offers warm comfort and deep emotional resonance to anyone who has ever lost something precious in life.
