Description: A fox finds a large egg inside a big tree. At first, the fox thinks about eating it right away, but then decides that a plump baby bird would taste even better. So the fox keeps the egg warm, planning to gobble up the baby bird once it hatches. When night falls, a weasel sniffing around comes to steal the egg from the fox. The fox fiercely jabs at the weasel with its sharp teeth and swats it away with its bushy tail. Next, a badger tries to take the egg too, but is no match for the fox. Day after day, the fox carefully keeps the egg warm. Finally, the baby bird is born… The fact that, in the end, the fox is the one who feels the greatest joy upon returning to the baby bird gives readers much to think about. Mothers, in particular, will surely understand the fox's feelings. Each scene beautifully captures the fox's expressions, and the look on the fox's face as it gazes at the baby bird is something no words can fully describe. The forest friends who appear throughout the book also add wonderful charm to the story. The illustrator was born in 1962 in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, and is known for sensitive, vivid illustrations that bring animals in nature to life. Other works include 'Grandfather Fir Tree' and 'Snowstorm,' among others.
