Description Memorable students and a formidable homeroom teacher — a quirky, lovable slice-of-life story Class 4, second year, at a certain girls' school. A student fixing her bangs, another secretly drawing a comic, another openly dozing off. Amid the lively, realistic scenes of high school girls' classroom life stands a teacher who is anything but lively — expressionless and stiffly formal at all times. Homeroom teacher Hoshi, who seems like no pushover, becomes the target of pranks from students who never know what they'll do next. Period 1: The Mysterious Drawing Word Chain A mysterious drawing word-chain game unfolds in the class log. Day one's drawing: a smartphone ("sumaho"). Day two: a puzzling shape. Day three: a squid ("ika"). Hoshi tells herself she shouldn't get caught up in the students' silly pranks, but as a Japanese language teacher, she can't help wanting to guess the word from day two — starting with "ho" and ending with "i." Period 2: Crisis Counseling Hoshi catches a student secretly drawing a comic during class. But what worries her more than the distraction is that the characters in the student's comic keep dying one after another. "I want to hear your opinion, teacher!" After reading the unpredictable draft comic, Hoshi wavers between giving realistic advice and cheering the student on. Period 3: The Dinner Party She Can't Quite Remember A long-overdue dinner with a fellow teacher sitting next to her. Hoshi says she'll have just one drink, but she gradually gets tipsy, and with each sip, more embarrassing memories resurface. "You don't like me, do you? I'm always a bother, always snapping at people." And unbeknownst to her, a student happens to witness this scene… Period 4: The Bazooka Attack A student mistakenly submits her diary instead of her class notebook. Having opened what feels like Pandora's box and read the entire diary, Hoshi returns it with a special comment. A few days later, she discovers a note being passed around the classroom by the student whose diary was read — and faces the biggest crisis of her teaching career. "How about we fire a bazooka the moment Ms. Hoshi walks into the classroom?" "I wanted to draw someone who isn't 100% good, but who you'd want to have around." The long-awaited full-length debut from Wayama Yama, creator of the work that captivated readers in Japan and Korea, I Fell for You, has finally arrived: Star of the Girls' School. Having appeared for two consecutive years in This Manga Is Amazing!, and drawing attention from celebrities and public figures across the board, Wayama Yama is going beyond a mere debut work to shape a new generation of Japanese comics. At the heart of the astonishing popularity and attention surrounding Wayama Yama's work is nothing other than the everyday — trivial, ordinary life. Star of the Girls' School opens with the narration "a silly story from a certain girls' school" and depicts the offbeat pranks and jokes shared between students and their teacher. A drawing word-chain game, a teacher's nickname, a draft comic secretly drawn during class — the author transforms these ordinary moments, which somehow feel like our own stories, into something just a little bit special through her signature humor and imagination. "I think a character who is 100% good feels unnatural, so I try to give my characters a bit of an edge here and there. But what I really wanted to draw were characters you'd wish were around you." (From a July 16, 2021 interview with Bungeishunju Online) "People you'd wish were around you" — this is how the author describes the characters in Star of the Girls' School. Students who aren't necessarily pretty or kind, but who are always ready with a clever prank. A teacher who isn't a "passionate educator," but who never overlooks a single student. Let's head to the school where they're waiting, with our shoulders relaxed and our hearts light.
