Open Korean is a textbook developed from materials used over the past seven years in the Korean Language Class of the International Exchange Volunteer Network, sponsored by the Korea Foundation. This free Korean language education program has been run since 2005 by volunteer Korean language education experts at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center for foreigners living in Korea. Each year, about 2,000 students from roughly 80 countries participate, with approximately 250 foreign students currently attending weekly two-hour classes ranging from beginner to advanced levels.
The textbook was carefully revised to select high-frequency grammar points at the beginner and intermediate levels, while reinforcing language functions across all areas. It is structured to naturally connect speaking, writing, listening, and reading, with 'Expanding Expressions' and 'Wings' sections to help learners build more advanced language skills and fluency.
A companion teacher's guide has also been published to help instructors use the materials more effectively, expanding the previously limited scope of teacher resource materials to cover both beginner and intermediate levels. The guide includes detailed lesson plans, step-by-step class procedures, real classroom examples, and a variety of classroom activities and worksheets, aiming to create a well-rounded Korean textbook that satisfies both students and teachers. Special care was taken to include beautiful, abundant illustrations that set this textbook apart from others and make it more approachable and friendly for students.
1. Classroom activities for each grammar point are included together with a separate activity workbook (Peeking into the Korean Classroom, sold separately for beginner and intermediate levels)
2. Real classroom journal examples offer valuable insight into student responses and classroom atmosphere
3. Detailed lesson plans cover essential Korean grammar, including the introduction, presentation, practice, and application of each grammar point
