Description
A masterpiece for the brain—discover the true joy of mathematics through puzzles!
Korea's leading bestselling math puzzle book, from Professor Park Bu-seong, widely recognized as the country's foremost math puzzle expert!
To mark its 10th anniversary, this beloved Korean math puzzle series, Fun Math Puzzles for Gifted Students, has been released in a revised edition (Volumes 1 and 2). Outdated information has been corrected and the covers redesigned.
When the book was first published, most math puzzle books available in Korea were translations of foreign titles from Japan, the US, and elsewhere—many of which didn't suit Korean sensibilities or contained numerous errors. Fun Math Puzzles for Gifted Students was different. Author Park Bu-seong had been active since 1989 on the PC communication service Hitel's riddle board, the KIDS BBS puzzle board (Quiz Wit), and the newsgroup rec.puzzles, enjoying and creating puzzles alongside true puzzle masters. As a puzzle curator himself, the content he compiled and presented was truly unique.
Fun Math Puzzles for Gifted Students is structured into three main sections: Problems, Answers, and Explanations. The Problems section presents 100 entertaining math puzzles organized by theme—logic, cryptarithms, geometry, and more. The Answers section provides detailed, logical model solutions. Rather than stopping at just providing answers, a separate Explanations section clearly introduces the mathematical meaning and general theory behind each puzzle. Break pages share the history and notable figures of recreational mathematics, as well as correcting common misconceptions with accurate information.
While the original Volume 2 was organized by difficulty level, the revised edition now organizes it by theme like Volume 1, for greater consistency and ease of use.
The puzzles in this book are designed to spark readers' curiosity and interest much like nonsense riddles or guessing games, while still requiring genuine logical and mathematical thinking. Simply encountering these puzzles will bring mathematical excitement and enjoyment, but the process of reviewing the answers and explanations to understand the underlying mathematical reasoning is equally fascinating. We invite you to dive into the joy of math puzzles—true works of art for the mind.
- Author's Note
The puzzles in Fun Math Puzzles for Gifted Students require logical and mathematical thinking. They include problems drawn from various foreign books, puzzles that circulated online, and original creations. While many puzzle books on the market feature similar problems and often provide answers without mathematical explanation, this book strives to go beyond simply providing answers—offering detailed, logical model solutions. The Explanations section further clarifies generalized concepts and mathematical significance.
- From the Preface to Volume 1
Approaching mathematics through puzzles is not only 'fun,' but also an excellent way to engage with the logical discipline of mathematics. How dreadful would it be if math were nothing more than memorizing formulas and plugging in numbers without understanding their meaning? Mathematics is not simply about addition and subtraction. Its true essence lies in 'logical thinking.' This is precisely why mathematics matters as a discipline.
- From the Preface to Volume 2
- Recommendations
This book presents 100 truly delightful math puzzles across 11 themes, including logic, games, balance scales, and cryptarithms. The Answers section explains each solution in detail, and the Explanations section clearly introduces the mathematical meaning and general theory behind about 40 of the puzzles. The content and level of the puzzles reveal the author's expert insight, and the concise, clear answers and explanations truly stand out.
- Kim Myung-hwan, Professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Seoul National University
When you carefully work through a complex and challenging process and finally arrive at the correct answer, the joy you feel is unlike anything else in the world. That's why I recommend readers not try to read this book all at once, but take a relaxed approach—solving two or three problems a day. At that pace, you could finish this precious book in about a month; reading just two days a week would also work well. Either way, you'll find yourself thoroughly absorbed in the delightful puzzlement that 'math quizzes' bring.
