One day, a child suddenly moves to a new place, and everything feels unfamiliar and overwhelming. The child now has a new house that doesn't feel comfortable at all, and a new school where there's no one they know. And now, the child has no friends. Wandering deep in thought through the unfamiliar neighborhood, the child finally makes up their mind, stops in their tracks, and begins calling out at the top of their lungs, "Neville!" One by one, the neighborhood kids gather and start calling out for Neville too, just as loudly. Who could this Neville be, that all the children are so eager to find? Is he a kid who lives in this neighborhood? What does he look like? All the children are curious about Neville. So who is Neville, really? And how did the child who just moved to this new neighborhood end up making a friend?
How did a child who moved to an unfamiliar place manage to make a new friend? Chaekkong Picture Book No. 19, A Very Special Way to Make a Friend, beautifully captures the feelings of a child who has suddenly moved to an unfamiliar town. A new neighborhood, a new house, and not a single familiar face around — what would be the biggest worry for a child in this situation? It's making a new friend. This picture book shows one day in the life of a child who, on their very first day in a new town, makes a friend in a truly special way that no one would have expected.
Moving to a new home is difficult, not just for children but for adults too. For children, moving means saying goodbye to everything familiar — the neighborhood they grew up in, their school, and their close friends. But even harder than saying goodbye is figuring out how to settle into the new place.
Here is a child who moved so far away that it took two full days and nights of driving to get there. The child didn't want to move at all. Their parents said, "You'll grow to love it here," but the child's heart remained as dull and colorless as the gloomy new house in the unfamiliar town. Now, the child has to start everything all over again — living in an uncomfortable new house and attending a new school where they don't know a single soul. But the biggest worry of all is having to make new friends.
Mom nudges the child to go out and meet people in the new neighborhood. But friendship isn't something you can simply find by walking around the block. Just like the Little Prince and the fox, who had to "tame" each other to become friends, building a real friendship takes time and care. So how does this child manage to make a friend in such an unfamiliar place?
Reluctantly wandering the neighborhood at their mother's urging, the child suddenly stops and calls out loudly, "Neville!" Hearing this unfamiliar voice, the neighborhood kids gather one by one. They ask the child — who they assume is Neville's best friend — who Neville is, what he looks like, and what he's good at. Then they all join in the search for Neville together. But even after searching every corner of the neighborhood, Neville is nowhere to be found. Before long, the sun sets, and it's time for everyone to head home. They promise to meet again tomorrow to keep searching for Neville. As the children walk home, they suddenly realize they never even asked the new kid's name. But maybe a name isn't what matters most — because by then, they've already become friends.
This picture book tells the story of the very special way a child, having moved to an unfamiliar place, manages to make friends. The simple, heartfelt text by Norton Juster — author of the Caldecott Medal–winning picture book The Hello, Goodbye Window — comes together beautifully with the artwork of G. Brian Karas, an award-winning children's book illustrator and author, to create a wonderful picture book. In particular, the illustrations shift from muted, colorless tones to gradually brighter hues as the young protagonist's feelings change, adding an extra layer of delight to the reading experience.
