Description: Snow has fallen heavily, covering the fields and mountains in white. With nothing to eat, Rabbit sets out to find food. On the white snow, Rabbit finds two turnips lying on the ground — Rabbit eats one and brings the other to Donkey's house, thinking Donkey might be hungry too. Donkey, having nothing to eat, leaves home and finds a sweet potato. After eating it, Donkey brings the turnip to Baby Goat's house, thinking Baby Goat might be hungry. Baby Goat, with nothing to eat, leaves home and finds some cabbage. After eating it, Baby Goat brings the turnip to Baby Deer's house, thinking Baby Deer might be hungry. Baby Deer, with nothing to eat, leaves home and finds some spinach. After eating it, Baby Deer brings the turnip to Baby Rabbit's house, thinking Rabbit might be hungry.
"Kind Friends" follows the simple structure of a traditional folktale, made up mostly of repeated words and phrases. This easy-to-understand yet heartwarming story has been cherished by children for a long time. The simpler the story, the more clearly its message shines through — and this picture book is a wonderful example of that. The illustrator, Tomoyoshi Murayama, developed an intellectual and tightly composed artistic style that avoids typical Japanese decorative or sentimental elements.
The author, Hu'an Yichun, based this story on a true event from the Korean War: a Chinese comfort delegation gave a box of apples to soldiers on the front lines, and remarkably, the apples made their way back to the delegation as a gesture of gratitude for their hard work. Just as Rabbit shares love with friends, it warms the heart to think that someone, unknown to us, might be sharing their kindness with us in return.
Hu'an Yichun was born in China in 1914 and is a member of the Chinese Writers Association. Tomoyoshi Murayama was a director and stage designer who contributed significantly to the early development of Japanese picture books. He passed away in 1977.
