Description: A picture book drawn with delicate, exquisite artistry, capturing a wonderful imaginative world that speaks deeply to a child's inner life. George has loved reading books since he was little, so much so that he wears round spinning glasses. One day, George discovers a large, golden egg in the henhouse. Sensing that something extraordinary is about to happen, he brings the egg into his room. He sets it on a warm armchair and reads to it for three whole days. After three days, the egg suddenly begins to wobble—and out comes a dragon! Having cared for the egg with such devotion, George now feels the responsibility of being the dragon's caretaker, much like a parent. He trains the dragon in various ways so it can grow up to be truly dragon-like. But once the dragon becomes fully aware of what it is, it longs to see others of its kind and leaves George's side. And then...
Relying more on illustration than text to convey the story, this book tells a tale of a child's growth through the symbol of a 'dragon.' The child, who is usually the one cared for by adults, experiences what it feels like to hatch and raise this extraordinary creature—taking on the role of a parent. From the devotion of reading to the egg for three days straight, to the special training given so the dragon could become truly itself, to finally accepting in his heart that the grown dragon has left—George experiences it all. George and the dragon leave each other with gratitude and warm friendship. Author Mark Robertson brings children's imaginative world to life beautifully, through a warm perspective and colors that reflect that warmth.
