Have you ever seen a snow tiger in the middle of summer? Two of the most beloved Korean folktales featuring tigers are 'The Red Bean Porridge Grandmother and the Tiger' and 'The Sun and the Moon.' Author Lee Ji-eun drew inspiration from these classic tales to create an entirely new story in 'The Legend of Patbingsu.' The book is packed with clever imagination and delightful twists: the finely shaved ice conjures up a snow-covered field, a snow tiger appears in the middle of summer chanting 'Give me something tasty and I won't eat you,' and the snow tiger even has a hidden superpower. The grandmother, who seems gruff but is tough and fearless, and the tiger, who looks like a soft, round snowball with the innocence of a child, bring charming comic relief to every page. 'The Legend of Patbingsu' captures that refreshing, head-tingling feeling of relief you get from a spoonful of cool patbingsu on a sweltering day. We hope this is a picture book that comes to mind whenever the weather turns hot, one that readers reach for every time they enjoy a bowl of patbingsu, and one that sparks a new flight of fancy with every taste. A delightful, satisfying, and heartwarming picture book born from inventive imagination and charming characters. Lee Ji-eun's debut picture book, 'Paper Dad,' explored the tender love between a father and daughter and the preciousness of family through the whimsical premise of a father suddenly turning into paper. Her second book, 'Grandma Mom,' expressed gratitude toward the grandmother who raised her and explored the idea of a grandmother's motherly love. And in 'Red Berry,' she captured the lovable journey of a baby bear climbing higher and higher up a tree in search of red berries. Drawn from the everyday moments we so easily overlook, Lee Ji-eun's stories are filled with the warmth of an all-embracing family, playful imagination, and unforgettable characters. In 'The Legend of Patbingsu,' the standout character is undoubtedly the tiger. But the snow tiger in this story is quite different from the fierce, fearsome tiger we usually imagine. As it eats the fruit the grandmother offers, laughing and dancing with delight, it seems more like an adorable child. In fact, you might start to wonder whether the snow tiger, who keeps asking the grandmother heading to the market for something tasty, isn't trying to harm her at all — but simply wants to play, begging for treats out of pure fondness. And then there's the grandmother, round and sturdy like a little peanut. Even amid the fear of 'Give me one rice cake and I won't eat you,' she lovingly grows fruits and grains for her grandchildren, determined not to let the tiger take them away. Beneath all the laughter that runs through 'The Legend of Patbingsu,' her love leaves our hearts feeling endlessly soft and warm.
