Description: This heartwarming story captures the friendship between Himchan, who is teased and called "chicken skin" because of his atopic dermatitis, and Myeong-ok, the daughter of a Pyongyang naengmyeon restaurant owner who fled North Korea and now attends elementary school in South Korea. It gently explores how we should embrace others who look different or come from different circumstances than our own.
Himchan is left out and bullied by his classmates because of his atopic dermatitis, while Myeong-ok still carries the fresh emotional wound of losing her younger brother Myeong-su during their escape from North Korea. Although the two become desk partners, they clash like cat and dog, unable to easily warm up to one another. Misunderstandings about each other's intentions keep deepening the tension between them.
Prejudice isn't found only in the adult world—children's communities also hold biases and discrimination against those they see as "lesser" than themselves, and kids don't hide these feelings. It's especially thought-provoking that the one who comes to understand and accommodate Himchan's inability to eat animal products due to his skin condition is Myeong-ok—someone who herself receives unwelcome "special treatment" simply for being from North Korea.
