Description
A grandmother's warm love as she prepares for death and passes on the preciousness of life. A quiet, deeply moving story that shows what kind of gift we should leave behind in this world.
About the Book
Have you ever thought about death? Everyone lives with a small fear of it, but because we never know when it will come, few of us truly prepare for it. Yet when death does arrive, what is the last thing we can do? If someone leaves behind a lesson for those who remain, that death becomes far more meaningful — showing that death is simply a part of life, and that life can be all the more precious because death exists. Perhaps this understanding can even give those left behind the strength to appreciate life more deeply.
"The Gift Grandma Left Behind" is a book that teaches the true meaning of death. Through the quiet parting of a grandmother pig and her granddaughter, it lets readers feel the beauty of both life and death.
Grandma Pig and her granddaughter have lived together for a long time — doing chores together, eating corn oatmeal together. Though it was an ordinary daily life, simply being with Grandma and sharing everything with her made the granddaughter happy. She even thought that if it meant she could keep living with Grandma, she wouldn't mind eating corn oatmeal — which she didn't even really like — forever.
Then one morning, Grandma Pig suddenly couldn't get up. Death had come for her. The next day, she managed to rise and calmly began to prepare for it — quite practical things that nonetheless made death feel real: returning library books, closing her bank account, paying off her debts.
But Grandma Pig's preparations for death weren't only about practical matters. There was something even more important left to do: saying goodbye to the world. Looking at the trees, the flowers, and the sky one last time to enjoy them. Grandma Pig says she wants to hold a party, and sets off on a walk with her granddaughter. They go around the village, listening, smelling, and tasting everything — a mixture of longing, memory, and appreciation felt at the end of life.
Looking at the sunlit leaves shimmering, the clouds gathered in the sky, and the pavilion reflected in the pond, Grandma shows her granddaughter, one by one, the beauty of this world. She knows well how beautiful the world is, and how wonderful it is to be alive. This is the very gift Grandma leaves behind — the understanding that the world is a beautiful place, and that life is deeply precious. Through her own death, Grandma teaches her granddaughter the value of life.
Accepting death calmly is never easy — especially when it is the death of one's only family. Once Grandma is gone, the granddaughter will be left alone in the world. But even though she must go on living by herself, the granddaughter comes to cherish life and accept Grandma's death as a natural part of it. Sad but composed, she lets Grandma go.
This book never exaggerates sorrow. The endlessly peaceful scene of Grandma's final moments is so beautiful that it allows readers to accept death without grief. The soft, transparent watercolor illustrations are more than enough to make both death and life feel beautiful. This is a beautiful book, remarkable for its warm and gentle portrayal of death.
