Notice: Selected as a 2015 Good Design Award winner. Hunminjeongeum Haerye Hangeul Teaching Tool 'Hangeul' was originally called 'Hunminjeongeum.' Hunminjeongeum Haerye is a kind of Hangeul textbook that presents the scientific and philosophical principles behind King Sejong's creation of Hangeul, explaining through examples how to easily learn and use the language. Our 'Hunminjeongeum Haerye Hangeul Teaching Tool' faithfully embodies the principles of Hangeul's creation as found in the Haerye text, redesigned as blocks to match modern Korean. The consonant blocks are organized into Molar, Tongue, Lip, Teeth, and Throat sound groups, while the vowel blocks are divided into Positive (Yang), Medial (Jung), and Negative (Eum) vowels. Hangeul was originally called “Hunminjeongeum.” Hunminjeongeum Haerye, serving as a Hangeul textbook, clarifies the scientific and philosophical grounds on which King Sejong created Hangeul. The textbook gives examples about Hangeul to ensure that people may easily learn the language. “Hunminjeongeum Haerye Teaching Tools for Hangeul” is our design to illustrate the principles of how Hangeul was created. We have translated these principles into blocks while also adapting them for contemporary Hangeul. The blocks consist of consonants (Molar, Tongue, Lip, Teeth, Throat) and vowels (Positive, Medial, Negative).
