"[Children's Books] 'National Geographic Nature Adventure' — The Dinosaur's Mouth Opens Wide!"
◇ National Geographic Nature Adventure (20 Volumes) / Written by Tom Kierein and others, translated by Kim Yang-mi and others / 10-16 pages per volume · $28,000 (KRW) per volume · Joongang Publishing (Ages 4 - 2nd grade)
"In the early morning sunlight, two baby pumas are playing with a desert horned lizard. Pumas live in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, USA. A desert is a place with almost no water, and sometimes unbearably hot... As morning comes, the kestrel flies out of its nest, while the cactus owl returns to its nest to sleep. There's one more owl — see if you can find it." (from 'Desert Animals')
When you open the book, a cactus pops up. Pull the tab up and down along the arrow, and two baby pumas move as if trying to catch a small lizard...
This children's 3D nature science series, published by National Geographic Society, comes in pop-up book form (books where pictures pop up when the pages are opened), sure to capture children's attention. Every time you turn a page, a baboon bares its fierce teeth and opens its mouth wide ('The Fascinating World of Monkeys'), or an octopus the size of a mother's hand reveals itself ('Mysterious Sea Creatures'). This 20-volume series, ranging from 'Baby Dinosaur Story' to 'Discovering Hidden Treasures,' contains 5-8 pop-ups per volume. In addition to pop-ups, the books include tabs that move pictures when pulled and flaps that reveal hidden pictures underneath when lifted.
Individual volumes are also available for purchase. Since pop-up books can be pricey, if buying the whole set feels like too much, purchasing individual volumes based on themes your child loves is also a great option. Except for 'Weather Changes' (about weather), 'Treasures of the Sea' (about sea exploration and ships like the Titanic), and 'Discovering Hidden Treasures' (about Mayan and Egyptian relics), all other volumes focus on the animal kingdom.
While even 4- and 5-year-olds will find these pop-up books fascinating and fun, the text content is actually better suited for early elementary schoolers. Many animal names appear that are unfamiliar even to adults. For children who can't read yet, books featuring familiar animals — like 'Mischievous Panda,' 'Baby Dinosaur Story,' and 'Zoo Story' — are recommended. For children who can read independently, more detailed thematic books like 'Animal Camouflage' and 'Desert Animals' are a great choice.
* An Eagle Soars Off the Page — Nature Adventure (20 Volumes Complete)
This is a pop-up picture book series that animal-loving kids will fall head over heels for. Every time you turn a page, a baby dinosaur pops out, a sea lion leaps up, a fearsome eagle takes flight, and a lizard flicks its tongue. The format is simple: each volume introduces the life of one type of animal, or explores nature through a theme such as 'Treasures of the Sea,' 'Animal Camouflage,' or 'Desert Animals.' Starting with baby dinosaurs, you'll meet all kinds of animals from around the world — lions, panda bears, monkeys, whales, foxes, woodpeckers, wrens, dead-leaf butterflies, poison dart frogs, mangrove snakes, mudskippers, and more.
One great feature: small pop-ups hidden within larger pop-ups let children operate them on their own, learning about animal life through hands-on play. Just 10 minutes a day of a parent reading and playing along would make this incredibly effective.
This is a 3D pop-up book where pictures spring up as you open it. The 20-volume set includes titles like 'Mysterious Sea Creatures,' 'Weather Changes,' and 'Jungle Expedition.' Each volume — whether showing a desert cactus, an underwater coral reef, or a monkey playing in jungle trees — reveals astonishingly detailed scenes that pop up and draw gasps of wonder. True to its origin from National Geographic, renowned worldwide for nature documentaries, this series is both accurate and realistic.
