Publisher's Review
Finding the Answer in Two-Generation, Three-Way Parenting!
This book is adapted from the SBS Special documentary episode, "They Have Something Special: Gyeokdae Education." The somewhat unfamiliar term gyeokdae gyoyuk refers to the traditional Korean practice in which grandparents take on the role of raising and even sleeping alongside their grandchildren while guiding their upbringing — a childrearing tradition passed down since ancient times.
As more couples become dual-income households, more parents are turning to grandparents for childcare help. In an era when women's participation in the workforce is the norm, 70% of working mothers rely on grandparents to help raise their children. Some see this positively, believing it enriches a child's character and improves their health, while others worry it may lead to bad habits and poor discipline. Even so, most parents agree that leaving children in the care of grandparents is better than leaving them with strangers — because they trust that grandparents, who have watched over their grandchildren since birth, will care for them with genuine love.

What they all had in common was this: they said, without exception, that "grandparents are different from parents."
While not scientifically conclusive, an epidemiological study conducted by Professor Elder's team at the University of North Carolina found that children raised with the involvement of grandparents tended to have better graduation records and, as adults...
