문화체육관광부 국립국어원은 1991년 초에 국가의 어문 정책 관련 연구를 주관하는 기관(국립국어연구원)으로 설립되고, 2004년 말에 국가의 어문 정책에 관련된 총괄적인 업무를 수행하는 ‘국립국어원’으로 발전했다. 온 국민의 기대 속에 태어난 국립국어원은 40여명이 일하는 크지 않은 기관이지만 각종 어문 규정을 제정하고 국어사전을 편찬하여 어문의 표준을 마련했다. 국어 생활의 질서를 세우고자 하였으며, 국어를 순화, 보급하고 국어 자료를 수집, 가공하며 국어 유산을 모아 보존하여 국어 생활의 향상을 꾀하고 있다. 또 국어 연구 성과를 집대성하여 체계화하고, 국어 관련 자료를 정보화하여 이러한 정보를 더 편리하게 이용할 수 있는 환경을 만듦으로써 국어 생활의 정보화를 이루고자 하고 있다. 또한, 2007년부터 세계 각국의 현지 일반 대중을 대상으로 사회교육원 형태로 ‘세종학당’을 운영해 오고 있다.
